Set Goals!

Forget about resolutions. set goals!

  • I'd like to talk to you for a minute about resolutions.

    The new year always brings talk of resolutions. That means the gyms will be packed (at least until February) as everyone tries to make this year the one where they lose...gain...accomplish... Right. You get the idea.

    Personally, I don't like resolutions. I'd rather set goals.

    Goals are measurable and attainable within a certain time-frame. For example, resolving to lose weight may sound like a great idea to some. But how much weight does that mean? If I lose 10 pounds, does that mean I did it? 5 pounds? 1 pound? It's all "losing weight" right? The same goes for spending more time with friends, arguing less with your spouse/kids/co-workers, eating "right" doesn't mean all that much if you don't make it measurable. Show me the money!

    Ok...what does this have to do with running?

    I'm going to encourage you to set personal goals related to running for 2012. Some of you may have already done this and are working towards them. Great! If not, think about a measurable and attainable goal. Don't just say "I'm going to run more." More than whom? Your neighbor? Your dog? You, last year?

    Hopefully you've read Jeff's blog about his goals for 2012. I'll admit 2,012 miles sounds like a fantastic goal...for him. For us mortals however...not so much.

    Make sure your goal is attainable for you.

    Don't compare your goals to anyone else's. And it doesn't have to be a certain amount of miles either. Set your goal to run the scheduled miles each Saturday with us (barring emergencies, of course) and finish your goal race this season. Commit to drinking __oz of water each day to stay healthy for those runs. Set a goal to attend at least 2 Wednesday night workouts per month to work on hills or speed. Set a goal to run 15 seconds/mile faster within 3 months. If you are having trouble coming up with a goal, ask a coach. We'd love to help you come up with something tailored to your fitness needs that is both challenging and attainable.

    Then do whatever it takes to meet that goal.

    But there's one last step. And it's the one everyone dreads, myself included. My palms get sweaty. I feel nervous and shaky like I might get sick. But it's the best thing you can do to help you meet that goal.

    Tell someone about your goals.

    Your coaches want to help you achieve these goals. And we can't help if you don't tell us.


    So here's my challenge:

    1. I want you to comment on this post, and "show me the money." Don't worry about what everyone else wrote. I'm going to go first, sweaty palms and all.
    2. On Saturday, during our run, I want you to tell the group your goal. Introduce yourself and say that goal loud and proud. We are going to be spending a lot of time training together in the next few months which means lots of time to make new friends!
    3. Now that you've told everyone your goals, encourage others to ask you how you're doing. And ask other group members how they're doing as well. MIT is a great group of encouraging people who want to see you succeed!

    Together we're going to have a great year!
