2015 Rocks and Roots Final Instructions

On January 11th and February 8th we are partnering with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to put on the finest trail running series at Alum Creek State Park. 

Packet Pickup begins Thursday, January 8th. You can pick up your Trail Running Package at Fleet Feet BEFORE race day only! 

Where: Rocks and Roots Trail at Alum Creek State Park. The start of the race is located just off Hollenback Rd and just south of the dog park. (3993 Hollenback Rd, Lewis Center OH 43035) Watch for yellow Fleet Feet arrows pointing you in the right direction!

When:

Sunday, January 11th and Sunday, February 8th. Both races start at 8:00 am. New this year we are starting the race in waves. Wave start times listed below. Plus, we have an early start option this year! 50K Participants can start as early at 7:00am. Participants choosing the early start option will need to check in at the timing tent the morning of each date to advise of their starting time.

  • 50K/40K/30K Start - 8:00am
  • 20K Start - 8:15am
  • 10K Start - 8:30am

Time: 

8:00am, course closes @ 4:00pm (8 hour limit - 15:27 pace for 50K). All participants must begin their final lap before 2:25pm.

Distance:

Participants can participate in a 10K, 20K, 30K, 40K or 50K. Distances must be selected prior to each race date. If you need to change your selected race distance please e-mail info@premierraces.com BEFORE race day!  

Parking: 

Parking is located near the start and finish in the marina parking lot. (4000 Hollenback Road, Lewis Center, OH) After parking, following the Yellow Fleet Feet arrows directing you to the start and finish area. 50K participants can park on the road leading to the start and finish area is desired. Road is on the right before the marina parking lot. Volunteers will have a list of 50K participants. You can check in there to be allowed to park closer to the start and finish are.

Dropping our changing distance once the race has started: Do NOT drop out or change distance without notifying the race timing crew.

Leave no trace: 

Whatever you carry in you must carry out! Littering will result in immediate disqualification in addition to not being allowed to participate in further Rock and Roots Trail Races and other Fleet Feet events.

  • February 8th Race
    • Thursday February 5th - 10am-8pm - Fleet Feet Sports
    • Friday, February 6th - 10am-8pm - Fleet Feet Sports
    • Saturday, February 7th - 10am-6pm - Fleet Feet Sports
    • Race Day - Sunday, February 8th - 6:30am-7:30am - Alum Creek Metro Park - Rocks and Roots Trail.  No trail running package pickup. Shirt and bib pickup only! Race Day Packet Pickup Ends Promptly at 7:30am

Swag: Those who signed up for the whole series will receive the Trail Running Package as listed below. Those who signed up for individual races do not receive the package, but do receive a hooded sweatshirt and event shirt.

  • Trail Running Package! 1 Amphipod Handheld Hydration Bottle, 1 Pair Balega Socks, 2 gels/bars from CLIF!
  • 1 hooded sweatshirt (unisex/mens sizing)
  • 2 unique event shirts (gender specific sizing)

Trail Running Package Pickup:

Thursday, January 8th through Sunday, January 11th, 2014 at Fleet Feet Sports. Packages may be picked up during normal business hours. Thursday-Friday 10am-8pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 12pm-5pm. Packages will not be available at the races. 

Course:  There will be at least one water crossing depending on course conditions! Please walk and run only on marked trails. Running off trail, including just off to the side of the worn path, damages the ecosystem, and causes unrepairable damage to the trail. The course is a 10K loop held primarily on single track trail. The course follows the loop counter-clockwise. Loop is repeated as necessary based on selected race distance. Course map can be found by clicking here! 

  • The Rocks & Roots Trail Series is aptly named as there are a LOT of rocks and roots. You will encounter stream crossings. Rocks & Roots are likely to be covered by leaves, snow, and or mud!
  • There are a couple small road crossings that you will encounter on each lap. During the start of the first lap the road will be shut down until all participants have crossed. Crossing is marked and participants are required to yield to traffic on road before crossing.
  • Due to the nature of a loop course please make audible intent of passing and to which side you will be passing. If being overtaken please yield to the passing runner.


Aid Stations:

 There will be aid stations, one at the Start/Finish and one at the 2.5 mile mark. Both aid stations will have water, pretzels, potato chips, cookies, candy, soda, and Clif nutrition products.  In an effort to minimize paper waste, all participants are strongly encouraged to carry a water bottle.   

Carry your own hydration: While we will have two aid stations along the course, it is highly recommended that you carry your own hydration. 

Volunteers: We will have volunteers at the aid stations and you may spot them as you bounce along the trails. Have a friend or family member interested in volunteering? Direct them here please! Please thank them for all their hard work, and remember they are there to help you! (Volunteers, you will receive an e-mail in the next few days with more details for you!)  

Rest Rooms: There are portable restrooms at the start/finish area.

Drop Bags: An area for drop bags is available at the Start/Finish near the restrooms. Bring your drop bags with you to the start of the race.

Awards: All finishers will receive a finishers medal! The first 50 completing BOTH 50Ks will receive a Rocks and Roots 50K Double Belt Buckle!

Trail Training Passport: Don't forget to pickup your Trail Training Passport when you pick up your package or packets! Save 15% off everything in the store between now and February 28th! Shop anytime. Get the gear you need. Shop as often as you want.

No Headphone Policy: Headphones are not permitted. Participants with headphones will be asked to leave the course without refund.

Dropping: Never drop out of the race by abandoning the course between aid stations and going "home." If you must drop please report to an Aid Station or Finish Line.  Runners who drop without reporting to an Aid Station or Finish Line will not be allowed to participate in future Fleet Feet Sports, or Premier Races events.

Disqualification Policy: The race cut off of 8 hours and the 15:27/mile pace on the course is strictly enforced.  The aid stations close accordingly.  If a runner is unable to keep the appropriate pace and is in danger of missing the 8 hour cut off they will be asked to remove themselves from the race.  If a runner refuses to do so they will be immediately disqualified and will be on their own for all aid on the race course as well as the finish line should they choose to continue.  This cut off is enforced for the safety of the runner as well as the rescue team who would need to search for runners on the course.  An early start option is available for those who do not feel as if they can complete the course in the allotted time.  If it is determined that any runner cuts the course in any fashion, whether intentional or not, they will immediately be disqualified from the race.
